For years, rumors of the 'Marsh Girl' have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life - until the unthinkable happens.

Enthralled from the get go!
It’s been a long time since I’ve read a book where I got annoyed that normal life got in the way of my reading :-) Beautifully written, I felt like I was in the Marsh with Kya. I can’t wait to read more Delia novels.

Disappointing after all the hype
Compelling and beautifully written this novel is ultimately unsatisfying due to its unbelievable plot and characters. The descriptions of nature and wildlife are enchanting but those relating to the story, particularly towards the end are often cringe worthy and childish.

Not for me
Author American. Co-author of three internationally bestselling nonfiction books about her life as a wildlife scientist in Africa. Winner of the John Burroughs Award for Nature Writing. Published in Nature, The African Journal of Ecology (a page turner if ever I've seen one), International Wildlife, and many others. Now lives in Idaho, from where she continues to support the people and wildlife of Zambia. This was her first novel. Plot Kya Clark, the "Marsh Girl" lives a primitive existence on a barrier island off the North Carolina coast. When hot a looking young guy meets a nasty end, the community finger is pointed at Marsh Girl. There follows a whole mess o' high quality nature writing garnished with coming of age romance, a dash of mystery and a courtroom scene. Writing I found the central character, the pixie in the marsh, unconvincing. She seems far too "normal" for some who's been isolated for a long time. (Think of Tom Hanks and the basketball ball). There wasn't much mystery but there were plenty of familiar tropes and a heap of cliches that made this book less and less interesting to me the further into it I got. The nature writing is of high quality, as it should be. Trouble is, nature writing doesn't float my boat, even 'Walden.' Bottom line Lots and lots of people have read this and seem to really like it. I'm not one of them. Sorry.

Touching
Beautifully written, touching on sensitive issues such as abandonment, negligence, domestic violence, isolation & the cruelest behaviours of prejudice demonstrated by a community. Kya is abandoned at the early age of 6 & has to fend for herself. She finds guidance & peace through nature and the living creatures around her whilst the community negligently ignores her needs as a child leaving her isolated & abandoned. Kya does find her way to survive through the marshlands & is taught to read by her only friend Tate, who inevitably is her first true love. When one of the community’s favourite is found dead, Kya is immediately accused because of the prejudice “of being the marsh girl” - capable of such a murder. The story is brilliantly written, very descriptive & I couldn’t put it down, loved the way it ended with a twist. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Not for me
Author American.

Brilliant
Couldn’t put this book down. There are many entertaining stories out there, but every now and then you come across an author who is a true storyteller. Someone who can truly craft a world, and it’s inhabitants, with such life that you develop an attachment to the places, to the people. This book did that for me. Thank you Delia.

Heartwarming and Heartwrenching
Delia Owens skilfully captures the minute charms of nature through the eyes of a highly complex and compelling protagonist, and at no point was I ever bored. I am not ashamed to admit that I shed many a tear, a mark of how well Owens brings the story and supporting characters to life.

Sad and hauntingly beautiful **spoiler as to whether it’s a good ending or not
This is a beautiful story. It’s worth the read. Perhaps it’s good to know that the story does end well. That way you can survive the sadder bits.

Breathtaking
This is such a sweet and powerful story. It tells of a young girl’s will to survive when all who should look after her and protect her leave. Great story telling left me totally hooked until the end. A must read!

Enchanting. Read in one bus ride.
This one is magic. Couldn’t put it down. Wanted to stop reading the closer I got to the end - just so that it didn’t have to end. Well done, girl.

Irresistible
My chest was clenched with so much emotion throughout Kya’s journey. Truly a story that would be a shame to not know.

I had a sense of deja vu
This is a good read but I kept thinking I’d read bits of it before. It has a similar storyline and characters to two other books I’d read previously.

Masterpiece
Owens’ characterisation and detailed descriptions are lyrical yet cinematic. Within the first few pages I was invested. Heartfelt and beautifully written. Highly recommend.

Not for me
Author American. Sorry.

Gripping novel
What a storyline! Loved the connection to nature, how well told the desperation for human connection was and then how it all played out.

Sensational
Such an intelligently woven tale of loneliness, life and love. It spoke to my soul pulling out tears and joy. Exceptional.
